Film Studies Coursework Gcse Science

Course Content and Assessment

Starting with familiar mainstream films, the course allows you to study films and the ways in which they are experienced in today’s global society, and investigates the place film has in communicating ideas, attitudes and cultural beliefs, both now and in the past. This is the linear 9-1 GCSE qualification. A linear qualification means that students must sit all their exams at the end of the course in June.

Students will study the following topics

  • Key Developments in US Film –this component assesses knowledge and understanding of three US Films. The films include both mainstream and independent films from different eras

  • Global Film: Narrative, Representation and Film Style –this component assesses the knowledge and understanding of three global films, produced outside of the US

  • Production Task – this component assesses the ability to apply knowledge and understanding of film to a production and its accompanying evaluative analysis

The course is assessed by two written exams, each worth 35% of the final marks and the production controlled assessment worth 30% of the final mark. GCSE Film Studies does not have tiers of entry, so all students sit the same exam paper
